The Versus City debuted in 1995, to coincide with the release of competitive fighting games like Virtua Fighter 2. At that time, connecting multiple generic cabinets to each other was a violation of Japan's Radio Law. The Versus City was designed as a workaround to this law. If games supported the function, an electronic bulletin board above the screen would display information about each player's damage and other statistics.
